What Is Glycerin in Skincare?

Glycerin is one of the most common ingredients in skincare — and one of the least discussed. It appears on ingredient lists across moisturisers, cleansers, serums, and toners, usually without much explanation of what it actually does or why it's there. It rarely gets its own product range or its own marketing campaign. It doesn't have a particularly interesting origin story.

What it does have is an exceptionally well-documented track record as one of the most effective and broadly tolerated humectants available. Understanding glycerin properly helps explain why so many well-formulated products include it, and what to look for in formulas that use it effectively.


What Is Glycerin?

Glycerin (also called glycerol) is a simple polyol compound — a colourless, odourless liquid with a slightly sweet taste. It occurs naturally in all living cells as part of the structure of fats and oils, and is released when triglycerides are broken down.

In cosmetics, glycerin can be derived from plant sources (typically soybean, palm, or coconut oil) or produced synthetically. What Does Glycerin Do for Skin?

Humectancy — drawing moisture to the skin
This is glycerin's primary and most important function. As a humectant, glycerin draws water molecules from the environment and from deeper skin layers to the outer surface of the skin, increasing the water content of the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of the skin.

The practical effect is immediate and visible: skin feels softer, more supple, and less tight after application of glycerin-containing products. With consistent use, it contributes to sustained improvement in skin hydration and flexibility.

The one caveat worth knowing: in very dry environments, where there is little moisture in the surrounding air for glycerin to draw from, it may draw water from deeper skin layers instead — which can theoretically contribute to dryness over time. This is why glycerin works best in formulas that also contain occlusive or emollient ingredients that help lock in the moisture it attracts.

Skin barrier support
Beyond humectancy, glycerin has been shown to interact directly with the skin barrier. It integrates into the intercellular lipid matrix of the stratum corneum — the lipid structure that holds skin cells together and prevents water loss — in a way that improves barrier function and flexibility.

Emollient properties
Glycerin also has mild emollient properties — it softens and smooths the skin surface. This contributes to the comfortable, non-tight feel of well-formulated products and makes it useful across a wide range of product types, from lightweight serums to richer creams.

Antimicrobial contribution
At higher concentrations, glycerin has antimicrobial properties that contribute to product preservation. In most skincare formulations this is a secondary benefit, but it contributes to the stability and safety of products that contain it.


How Does Glycerin Compare to Hyaluronic Acid?

Both glycerin and hyaluronic acid are humectants, and both are commonly used in skincare. The comparison is worth making because they're often discussed as alternatives when they're more accurately complements.

Hyaluronic acid has exceptional water-binding capacity — it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water — and is available in multiple molecular weights that hydrate at different depths of the skin. It has become a headline ingredient in skincare partly because of this impressive property and partly because of effective marketing.

Glycerin is less glamorous but in some respects more versatile. It's effective at lower concentrations, integrates more directly with the skin barrier, works across a broader pH range, and is considerably more affordable to formulate with. It is also better studied over a longer period — the evidence base for glycerin's skin benefits extends back several decades.

Is Glycerin Safe?

Glycerin is one of the most extensively studied and well-established skincare ingredients in existence. It has been reviewed repeatedly by regulatory bodies and independent expert panels, and is consistently assessed as safe for use in cosmetic products across a wide range of concentrations and product types.

It is non-irritating, non-comedogenic, non-sensitising, and compatible with essentially all other skincare ingredients. Adverse reactions to glycerin are extremely rare. It is safe for all skin types, including sensitive and reactive skin, and for use during pregnancy.


What Concentration of Glycerin Is Effective?

Glycerin is effective at concentrations from approximately 5% to 20% in leave-on products. Below 5%, its humectant effect is minimal. Above 20%, it can feel sticky on the skin.

Because ingredient lists are written in descending order of concentration, a product where glycerin appears in the first three to five ingredients typically contains it at a meaningful, effective concentration. A product where it appears near the bottom of a long list — after thickeners, preservatives, and fragrance — likely contains it at a concentration too low to meaningfully affect skin hydration.

The Bottom Line

Glycerin is not the most exciting ingredient in skincare. It doesn't have a compelling origin story, a particularly striking name, or a specific skin concern it's uniquely associated with. What it has is decades of clinical evidence, a well-understood mechanism, and a track record of consistent performance across every skin type.

When glycerin appears early in a product's ingredient list — particularly in combination with other humectants, emollients, and barrier-supporting ingredients — it is doing meaningful work. When it appears near the bottom, it is largely decorative.
